Windows of opportunity toward a reform of the debt architecture

FfD4 fell short of the structural transformation demanded by the Global South and civil society. Nevertheless, the Seville Commitment left some windows of opportunity open: the creation of an intergovernmental process on debt under the auspices of the UN, the establishment of a Debtors’ Forum to enhance coordination among borrowing countries, and the promotion of responsible borrowing and lending principles, building on UNCTAD’s work. The Political Declaration to be adopted in November 2025 at the WSSD must offer more than aspirational language, and set out explicit commitments and measurable actions for Member States for social justice, to reduce inequalities, eradicate poverty, uphold human rights and to build societies that work for everyone and bring peace, stability, and prosperity. Read more

Psychological aspects of multilateral social development policy and the global development agenda

On May 20, UN-Geneva Representative Odile Frank, ScD, participated in a panel at the World Health Assembly organized by the Global Mental Health Action Network and the World Federation of Public Health Associations addressing The Social and Commercial Determinants of Mental Health.
Frank’s presentation on the social and commercial determinants of mental health (PDF, 289KB) emphasized the benefits of universal social protection in reducing the harmful effects of poverty on psychological wellbeing and the adverse impact of impoverishment on the normal physical and cognitive development of children. Recommendation 202 is cited, as are the four security guarantees of universal social protection. The remarks strengthen the argument in favour of social protection beyond the alleviation of poverty itself. Video of the panel. Read the presentation

Civil Society Call for a Global Fund for Social Protection

Civil society organizations and trade unions unite to call for a Global Fund for Social Protection to protect the most vulnerable.

Social Security for All

Civil society organizations and trade unions call governments and international financial institutions to make a commitment to create social security systems that enable everyone to realize their rights. Governments and financial institutions should end policies that have been failing millions of people.

SP&PFM Programme

The programme Improving Synergies Between Social Protection and Public Finance Management provided medium-term support to multiple countries aiming to strengthen their social protection systems at a national level and ensure sustainable financing. The programme aimed to support countries in their efforts towards achieving universal social protection coverage.
This initiative was implemented jointly by the ILO, Unicef, and the GCSPF.
