Time to Walk the Talk: The IMF’s tax advice, 2022-2024

By Nabil Abdo, OXFAM. Since the pandemic, the IMF’s leadership has been urging countries to pursue more progressive tax policies, backed up by the Fund’s own research. Despite this encouraging development, the IMF’s policy advice on tax in its Article IV reports since the pandemic has been skewed towards regressive taxation. This indicates its continued insistence on austerity as the default way forward, thereby entrenching gender and economic inequalities. Read more

Team Europe Event: Building Synergies for Social Protection in Sub-Saharan Africa

At a high-level event in Brussels civil society brought two key messages to the table. If the EU wants to do things differently than other global players it should involve civil society. "By talking to trade unions, social health insurance organisations and other social movements and by involving them in the design of programmes, you ensure that the policy effectively responds to people's needs. You also get more ownership from the population." And second, don’t be shy to actively promote the core pillars of the European social model, including solid and universal social protection systems. Pre-AFSD Regional Webinar Series 2026

Rethinking Sustainable Development amid Wars and Uncertainty in the Arab Region.
In the lead-up to the Arab Forum for Sustainable Development (AFSD), the Arab NGO Network for Development (ANND), in collaboration with members of the Regional Sustainable Development Platform—ATUC, CAWTAR, HIC-HRLN, ARFPD, ANDE, and Transparency International—is organizing a regional webinar series bringing together civil society actors from across the Arab region.
This series aims to create a space for reflection and dialogue on key development challenges, while contributing to the articulation of regional priorities and civil society perspectives ahead of AFSD and the broader global development agenda. Read more

ILO strategy on financing social protection

The ILO webinar will highlight countries’ progress in expanding social protection coverage by at least two percentage points. It will also examine how countries have created additional fiscal space to support this expansion, present the ILO’s engagement with the IMF on social protection at the country-level, and outline the ILO proposal on social protection under the UN Framework Convention on International Tax Cooperation

This ILO paper examines how Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) may affect labour markets across 135 countries, covering around two-thirds of global employment. It focuses on how exposure differs between advanced and developing economies, and how digital infrastructure and task composition shape the balance between automation risks and productivity gains. Civil Society Call for a Global Fund for Social Protection

Civil society organizations and trade unions unite to call for a Global Fund for Social Protection to protect the most vulnerable.

Social Security for All

Civil society organizations and trade unions call governments and international financial institutions to make a commitment to create social security systems that enable everyone to realize their rights. Governments and financial institutions should end policies that have been failing millions of people.

SP&PFM Programme

The programme Improving Synergies Between Social Protection and Public Finance Management provided medium-term support to multiple countries aiming to strengthen their social protection systems at a national level and ensure sustainable financing. The programme aimed to support countries in their efforts towards achieving universal social protection coverage.
This initiative was implemented jointly by the ILO, Unicef, and the GCSPF.
